Household items

Everyday junk we haul from Hollywood homes

Most loads are a mix, and a mix is fine. We take the small things along with the big pieces, so there is no need to sort the pile before we arrive. Just keep anything hazardous to one side and tell us about it.

  • Boxes, bags, clothes, books and toys
  • TVs, computers, printers and other electronics
  • Treadmills, exercise bikes and weight benches
  • Grills, patio umbrellas and pool furniture
  • Carpet, rugs and rolled flooring
  • Bicycles, strollers and children's furniture
  • Shelving units, cabinets and storage racks

What we can't take

What won't junk removal take in Hollywood?

We do not take chemicals, wet paint, asbestos, oil or toxic waste. These need a household hazardous waste program or a licensed specialist, and a load that mixes them with ordinary junk can be turned away at the disposal site. If any of them is in your pile, point it out when you send the photo. We take everything else and leave those items for the county program described below.

  • Chemicals: pool chemicals, pesticides, solvents and strong cleaners
  • Wet paint: any can still holding liquid paint, latex or oil-based
  • Asbestos: suspect floor tile, pipe wrap or ceiling texture, which should be tested before anyone disturbs it
  • Oil: motor oil and other automotive fluids
  • Toxic waste: anything labeled toxic, poison or hazardous
Where they go instead

Where Hollywood residents take paint, chemicals and oil

To one of Broward County's residential drop-off centers. Hollywood is one of the cities whose residents can use them for household hazardous waste and electronics, and the city's disposal directory points residents to the South center in West Park. The centers open on Saturdays. Bring photo ID and a document showing your address, such as a tax bill, a utility bill or a voter registration card. Paint goes in containers of 5 gallons or less, up to 25 gallons a visit.

The county and the city list different opening hours, so check before you drive over. Not every Broward city takes part: Hallandale Beach runs its own quarterly drop-off at 630 NW 2nd Street instead, so residents of other towns should check with their city first. Suspected asbestos is not a drop-off item at all; it needs testing and a licensed abatement contractor.

Tires

Do you take tires in Broward County?

Yes, in small numbers: a handful, well under the state's limit. Florida sets the limit for everyone. Under section 403.717 of the state statutes, waste tires may only go to a permitted facility and may not be landfilled whole, and a customer may only hire a waste tire collector registered with the state. The state's guidance adds that anyone carrying more than 25 tires at a time on Florida roads must be registered.

Hollywood's bulk pickup does not take tires at all, and the county drop-off centers accept only a handful per visit from residents. A shop, a landlord or anyone with a big pile of old tires needs a registered waste tire collector, who shows a state decal on the driver's door.

Special items

Items with their own rules in Hollywood

A few things we take are handled differently once they leave your home, because state or federal law says so.

Refrigerators, freezers and AC units

Federal rules require the refrigerant to be recovered before the appliance is scrapped, and Florida bans these white goods from landfills. They go for recycling, not the dump.

Mattresses

Hollywood's bulk pickup takes them from houses. In Miami-Dade, curbside mattresses must be sealed in a plastic bag. Few charities reuse one, so most are disposed of.

Electronics

Florida has no specific law on discarded electronics and recommends recycling. Hollywood's bulk pickup does not list them; the county drop-off centers take them from residents.

Construction debris

Hollywood's bulk pile refuses drywall, tile, concrete, wooden fencing and dirt. We haul renovation debris, priced on weight as well as space.

Reuse

What happens to usable items we pick up in Hollywood?

Items in good condition can be set aside from the load for donation instead of disposal. Ours go to local charities and recycling yards that accept them. Each charity decides what it will accept, so a piece we set aside is not guaranteed a second home.

If you would rather donate things yourself, it helps to know the rules first. Habitat for Humanity's Broward ReStore on W Broward Blvd takes working appliances, cabinets, doors, boxed tile, tools and clean mattresses, but not electronics, carpet or clothing. Goodwill's Hollywood stores on N Dixie Hwy and Taft St take furniture, household goods, clothing and electronics, but not mattresses, large appliances or office furniture. Whatever is left after that, we haul away in the same visit.

FAQ

Questions about what we take in Hollywood

What won't junk removal take in Hollywood, FL?
We do not take chemicals, wet paint, asbestos, oil or toxic waste. Hollywood residents can take paint, chemicals and oil to Broward's South drop-off center in West Park on Saturdays, with photo ID and proof of address. Suspected asbestos needs testing and a licensed abatement contractor. We take nearly everything else two people can lift.
Where do I take old paint and chemicals in Hollywood?
To Broward County's South drop-off center at 5601 W Hallandale Beach Blvd in West Park, which Hollywood's own disposal directory points residents to. It opens on Saturdays; check the hours first, because the city and the county list different times. Bring photo ID and a document with your address. Paint goes in containers of 5 gallons or less.
Can you take tires from a Broward County home?
A few, with a normal load. Florida requires anyone carrying more than 25 waste tires at a time to be registered with the state as a waste tire collector, so a large pile from a shop or a yard needs a registered collector. Tell us how many tires there are when you send the photo.
Do you take refrigerators and AC units in Hollywood?
Yes. Hollywood's rule about removing the doors and Freon applies to its own curbside pickup. Federal rules require the refrigerant to be recovered before the appliance is scrapped, and Florida bans white goods from landfills, so these go for recycling. See appliance removal for how a pickup works.
Do you take old TVs and computers in Hollywood?
Yes. TVs, monitors, computers and printers go out with the rest of the load. Florida has no specific law on discarded electronics, and Hollywood residents can also drop them at the county's South center with proof of residency. Wipe or remove any hard drive with personal data before pickup.
Do I have to sort my junk before you come to my Hollywood home?
No. A mixed pile of furniture, boxes, bags and appliances is fine, and we load it as it is. The only things to keep separate are hazardous items: chemicals, wet paint, asbestos, oil and toxic waste. Renovation debris can go in the same load, and we price it on weight as well as space.
