What we clear from garages in Hollywood
Almost everything a garage collects goes on the truck. The one group we leave behind is paint and chemicals, covered in the next section. Boxes that have sat through a few humid Hollywood summers often split when lifted, one more reason to let a crew do the carrying. The usual garage load:

We do not take paint, chemicals, oil, asbestos or other toxic waste, so those stay on a shelf for you to drop off. Hollywood's own bulk pickup refuses them too, along with propane tanks, so none of it can go on the swale either.
Hollywood residents take household chemicals and paint to Broward County's South Residential Drop-off Center at 5601 W Hallandale Beach Blvd in West Park. It is open on Saturdays and asks for photo ID plus proof of address, such as a tax bill or utility bill. The county's 2025 flyer limits paint to containers of 5 gallons or less, and 25 gallons a visit. The county and the city list different Saturday hours, so call Broward on 954-765-4999 before you drive over. Hollywood's disposal directory lists where everything else goes.
Cans that have sat through years of garage heat often rust at the rims and bottoms, so carry them to the car in a box.
Old garage fridges and freezers
Yes, we take the garage fridge and the chest freezer, working or not. Hollywood's bulk pickup will only take a refrigerator once the doors and Freon have been removed, and federal rules bar venting the refrigerant when an appliance is thrown away.
Empty the fridge or freezer and unplug it the day before, with a towel underneath, so it can defrost. We take washers, dryers and old water heaters from the garage too. Appliance removal explains what happens to the refrigerant and why Florida keeps appliances out of landfills.
Shelving and workbenches
Freestanding shelving and workbenches come apart and go on the truck with the rest. Metal units are unbolted and stacked flat, and a heavy wood bench leaves whole or in sections, whichever fits the door. We also take down shelves, benches and overhead racks screwed to the wall or ceiling.
If you want to keep the shelving and lose what is on it, say so. Emptying the shelves and leaving the units standing is a smaller load and a smaller price.
Garage junk and Hollywood's swale rules
If you clear the garage yourself, the city has firm rules about the pile. Bulk goes out no more than 24 hours before your zone's monthly date, in the alley if you have one and otherwise on the swale. The limit is 6 cubic yards, a pile about 9 feet long, 6 feet wide and 3 feet high, and a full two-car garage can easily be more than that. Yard waste cannot be mixed in; it goes out separately each week, up to 4 cubic yards.
A pile that breaks the rules gets 24 hours to be fixed. After that the city removes it and bills disposal plus a $200 administration fee, and repeat civil citations run $75, $150, $250 and then $500, according to the city's sanitation FAQ. Here is how common garage items fare:
