Why Junky Jan

Why Hollywood homeowners call us for hot tub removal

A dead hot tub is usually the biggest single thing in a backyard. Whole, it is too wide for most side gates and too heavy for a few friends, and most city bulk services either refuse it or want it cut up first.

A portable spa is built in layers: an acrylic shell backed with fiberglass, spray foam insulation, a wood or synthetic cabinet on a frame, and a pump, heater and control pack underneath. Taking one out means cutting through all of it and carrying the pieces out, which is the job we do.

  • Portable, above-ground spas, from two-seat tubs to eight-seat ones
  • The cover, steps, cover lifter and any loose parts go with it
  • Priced by truck space as a heavy item, quoted before we cut

The job

How do you remove a hot tub?

Most hot tubs leave in pieces. Once the tub is drained and the power is off, we take off the cover and steps, cut the cabinet, frame and shell into sections two people can carry, and lift out the pump and heater. The sections go out through the gate and into the truck. If the path is wide and flat enough, a smaller spa can sometimes go out whole on its side; your photos tell us which way it goes.

This page covers portable, above-ground hot tubs. A spa built into a deck or set into concrete is closer to demolition; send photos and we tell you whether it is a job we take on. The slab or pavers the tub stood on stay unless you ask about them, because concrete is a separate question (see construction debris removal).

Before we arrive

Does the hot tub need to be drained and disconnected first?

Yes, both. Most full-size hot tubs are hard-wired on their own circuit through a disconnect box a few feet from the tub. A licensed electrician should switch off the breaker, disconnect the tub at the box and cap the wires before removal day. Our crew does not do electrical work. A smaller plug-in spa that runs from an ordinary outdoor outlet only needs unplugging. Either way, we do not start cutting until the power is confirmed off.

Draining comes next. Turn the power off first so the heater and pump never run dry, then open the drain valve and run a hose to a spot on your own property where the water can soak in. A full tub holds several hundred gallons and takes hours to empty, so start the day before. If it cannot be drained in time, tell us when you book.

Leftover spa chemicals, such as chlorine, bromine and pH adjusters, are household hazardous waste, and we do not haul them. Hollywood sends residents with proof of residency to the county drop-off at 5601 W Hallandale Beach Blvd on Saturdays.

Access

Can you get a hot tub out through a gate or side yard?

Usually, once it is in sections. The narrowest point between the tub and the truck decides the plan: a side gate, the strip between the house and the fence, a screen enclosure door, or a step down from a deck. Measure it, send the number with your photos, and we plan around it.

Tell us too about anything in the way that cannot move, such as an AC unit in the side yard, a pool, planters or a low roof edge. A tub on a raised deck or behind a pool is still a normal job; it just takes more carrying.

City pickup

Will the city pick up a hot tub in Hollywood or nearby towns?

Rarely, and never whole. Hollywood's sanitation page does not name hot tubs either way. It does refuse plumbing materials and wiring, which a spa is full of, and a typical 7-foot-square spa takes up about 5 of the 6 cubic yards a house is allowed each month. The neighboring cities are clearer:

TownHot tubs in bulk pickupWhat you have to do
Fort LauderdaleTaken as a courtesy item, even though construction debris is not (city brochure)Cut it into sections no longer than 6 feet, inside the 10 cubic yard monthly limit
Pembroke PinesRefused: hot tubs are on the city's excluded list with boats, glass and tires (City of Pembroke Pines)Hire someone to remove it
HollywoodNot named; plumbing materials and wiring are refusedAsk the city first, and keep the pile under 6 cubic yards
Miami Gardens and AventuraCounty bulky pickup takes nothing over 150 poundsCut it into pieces under 150 pounds each
How pricing works

How much truck space a hot tub takes

Once it is cut down, a hot tub stacks into the truck like any other load, and the price follows the space plus the fact that it is a heavy item. Rough guides:

A small spa

A two- or three-seat tub with its cover and steps.

A standard spa

A six- to eight-seat tub with its cabinet, pump and cover.

A spa and the yard

The tub plus patio furniture and junk from around it.

Send a photo to (305) 764-2597 and you get the exact price before we lift anything.

FAQ

Hot tub removal questions from Hollywood customers

How much does hot tub removal cost in Hollywood, FL?
A hot tub is priced by the truck space its sections fill, as a heavy item. The size of the tub moves the price most. Send a photo of the tub and one of the path to the street, and you get the exact price before any cutting starts. More on pricing is on our junk removal cost page.
Will Pembroke Pines bulk pickup take my old hot tub?
No. Pembroke Pines lists hot tubs among the items its bulk collection refuses, along with contractor debris, glass of any kind, boats and tires. A Pembroke Pines homeowner with a dead spa has to have it removed privately. We are about 20 minutes away and take it from the backyard.
Does Fort Lauderdale pick up hot tubs with bulk trash?
As a courtesy, yes, if the tub is cut into sections no longer than 6 feet and the pile stays inside the 10 cubic yard monthly limit. You still have to drain it, have the power disconnected, cut it up and carry the pieces to the curb yourself. If you would rather skip all of that, we do the whole job.
Who disconnects the electricity on a hot tub in Hollywood?
A licensed electrician. Most spas are hard-wired through a disconnect box near the tub, and the breaker has to be off and the wires capped before the tub is cut. A plug-in spa only needs unplugging. We start cutting only once the power is confirmed off.
Can you remove a hot tub from a Broward backyard with no truck access?
Yes, in most cases. Cut into sections, a hot tub goes through a standard side gate or down a narrow side yard and is carried to the truck. Measure the narrowest point on the way out and send it with your photos, and we plan the job around it.
Do you take the hot tub cover and steps in Hollywood?
Yes. The cover, the steps, the cover lifter, the pump, the heater and any loose parts all go in the same trip. If there is patio furniture or yard junk around the tub you want gone as well, put it in the photo and it goes on the same price.
