Why Junky Jan

Why Hollywood homeowners call us for appliance removal

An old appliance is heavier and harder to get rid of than most junk. A refrigerator has to come through doorways in one piece, and the city will not take it from the curb until the doors and refrigerant are gone. A washer that died in a second-floor laundry closet needs two people to get it down the stairs. We do the carrying, and we handle where it goes after.

If the fridge is one part of a bigger job, a garage cleanout or house cleanout covers the rest in the same visit.

  • We carry it out from the kitchen, laundry room, garage or condo unit
  • One appliance or a whole kitchen, priced by truck space
  • Pickup the same day or the next when we have a slot

  • Washers and dryers, stacked or side by side
  • Stoves, ranges, wall ovens and cooktops

Refrigerant

Refrigerators and freezers: what happens to the refrigerant?

The refrigerant in a fridge, freezer or window AC unit has to be recovered, not released. Federal law bars anyone disposing of an appliance from knowingly venting its refrigerant (40 CFR 82.154). The rules put the recovery step on the final processor, usually the scrap metal recycler or landfill that takes the appliance last. That facility must recover the refrigerant itself or get a signed statement saying who recovered it and when, and keep the record for three years (40 CFR 82.155).

Under those rules the refrigerant can stay sealed inside the appliance while it is moved, as long as it is recovered before the appliance is scrapped. Refrigerators and freezers we haul go whole to recycling, where the refrigerant is recovered before the metal is scrapped.

Florida law

Why old appliances in Florida go to recycling, not a landfill

Florida bars white goods from landfills (F.S. 403.708). The state's definition of white goods covers discarded refrigerators, freezers, ranges, water heaters, air conditioners and heaters. So an old appliance belongs at a metal recycler, where the steel, copper and aluminum are recovered once the refrigerant is out.

It is also why a dumpster or a building's trash room is the wrong place for an old fridge. Some condo towers' rules bar owners from leaving unwanted furniture or appliances anywhere in the building.

City pickup

Will the city take my fridge? Hollywood's rules and its neighbors'

Hollywood's monthly bulk pickup takes stoves and dishwashers, and it takes a refrigerator only with the doors and Freon removed. The pickup serves single-family homes and duplexes only, up to 6 cubic yards on your zone's date. Getting the Freon out before bulk day means finding someone with recovery equipment first.

The cities around Hollywood each ask for something different before a fridge goes on the curb:

CityWhat the city asks before it takes a fridgeSource
HollywoodDoors and Freon removedCity sanitation page
Pembroke PinesA technician's sticker showing the Freon is out, and the doors and compressor removedCity bulk waste page
MiramarA placard certifying the appliance is refrigerant and Freon freeCity bulk collection page
Fort LauderdaleEmptied, with the doors removed or secured; no Freon step listedCity bulk trash brochure
Laundry, water heaters, AC

Washers, dryers, water heaters and AC units

Washers and dryers usually go out as a pair; drain the washer and unhook its hoses. A gas dryer or gas range has to be disconnected from the gas line by a plumber or the installer of the new one, so tell us when you book if anything is still connected. A water heater is far heavier with water in the tank, so have it drained first.

Window and portable air conditioners hold refrigerant, so they go the same way as a fridge. A central AC condenser is different: disconnecting it means opening the refrigerant lines, which is work for a certified HVAC technician, so it has to be disconnected before anyone hauls it.

How pricing works

How much truck space appliances take

Appliances are priced by the space they take in the truck. These are rough guides, and a photo gives the exact figure.

One appliance

A fridge, a washer, a stove or a water heater.

A pair

A washer and dryer, or a fridge and a chest freezer.

A kitchen

Fridge, range, dishwasher and microwave from a kitchen remodel.

Appliances and more

An old garage fridge and freezer, plus the boxes and furniture around them.

Send a photo to (305) 764-2597 and you get the exact price before we lift anything.

How it works

How appliance removal works in Hollywood, in 4 steps

  1. Step 1

    Send a photo

Text a photo of the appliance to (305) 764-2597. Tell us the floor, and whether it is still connected.

  2. Step 2

    Get the price

The price follows the truck space it fills. Nothing moves until you agree to it.

  3. Step 3

    We carry it out

We move it from where it stands, with care for floors and door frames on the way out.

  4. Step 4

    Off to recycling

We load it and haul it away. A working appliance can be kept aside for donation.

Donation

What happens to appliances that still work?

A clean, working appliance can sometimes be reused instead of scrapped. Habitat for Humanity's Broward ReStore accepts working appliances, and the Salvation Army's Hollywood donation center lists appliances among what it takes; Goodwill South Florida does not take large appliances. Each charity decides what it accepts, so we cannot promise a given fridge or stove will be taken. If yours works, say so when you book, and we keep it apart from the scrap load.

FAQ

Appliance removal questions from Hollywood customers

How much does appliance removal cost in Hollywood, FL?
Appliance removal is priced by the space the appliance takes in the truck, so a single washer is a small load and a whole kitchen is a larger one. Send a photo to (305) 764-2597, tell us the floor, and you get the price before we move anything. See junk removal cost for how a load is measured.
Do I need the Freon removed before you take my fridge in Hollywood?
Hollywood's bulk pickup will not take a refrigerator until the doors and Freon are removed. When a hauler takes it, federal rules place the recovery step on the final processor, usually the metal recycler, which recovers the refrigerant or keeps a signed record of who did. Tell us when you book whether yours has already been emptied.
Will Hollywood's bulk pickup take my old stove?
Yes, for single-family homes and duplexes. Stoves and dishwashers are on the city's bulk list, collected once a month by zone, up to 6 cubic yards, set out no more than 24 hours before your date. Condos and apartments are not served, and you have to get the stove to the swale or alley yourself.
Can you take a refrigerator out of a Hollywood Beach condo?
Yes. Many beach towers require large items to go down in the service elevator, booked ahead, during weekday hours, and some want a certificate of insurance before a contractor comes in. Name the building when you book, and we work to its rules. See condo junk removal for how a high-rise pickup runs.
Do other Broward cities have the same fridge rules as Hollywood?
No. Pembroke Pines wants a technician's sticker plus the doors and compressor off, Miramar wants a placard certifying the unit is refrigerant free, Fort Lauderdale only asks for the doors off, and Davie wants the Freon emptied by a certified dealer. The city's rule only matters if you plan to use its curbside pickup. A hauler works under the federal and state rules above instead.
