Upright, spinet or grand: which piano do you have?
The type decides the crew and the route out, so it is the first thing we ask. Measure from the floor to the top of the lid: that height tells you which upright you have. Weights are the commonly quoted ranges; old uprights can run heavier.
Grand and baby grand pianos are a different job. The legs, the pedal lyre and the lid come off, and the body travels on its side on a padded piano board. We take baby grands and grands too.

Can you get a piano down stairs or into a condo elevator?
Yes, with a plan made before the day. On stairs, an upright goes down one step at a time with people above and below it, so the count matters: tell us how many steps there are, whether there is a landing or a turn, and how wide the stairway is. A second-floor walk-up takes more hands than a few entry steps, and we plan the crew around it.
In a condo tower, the building sets the terms. Published tower rules along this coast share a pattern: the service elevator is booked ahead, often 48 hours or more; the association wants a certificate of insurance on file; and work happens on weekdays inside set hours. Will Hollywood's bulk pickup take a piano?
Only if you can get it to the curb yourself, and even then it is uncertain. Hollywood's monthly bulk collection takes household items like dressers, desks and chairs from houses and duplexes, but its list does not name pianos (City of Hollywood sanitation). The city collects only from the alley or swale, so a 400-pound spinet has to reach the alley or swale by other means, no more than 24 hours before your zone's date. Condos and apartments are not served at all.
In Aventura and Miami Gardens the answer is no. Miami-Dade's bulky waste pickup refuses any item over 150 pounds, which rules out every piano in one piece (Miami-Dade bulky waste).
Taking a piano apart at home to get it under a limit is not a weekend project. The strings hold roughly 18 to 20 tons of combined tension, and the cast-iron plate alone can weigh well over 100 pounds.

Can an old piano be donated or recycled in Broward?
Sometimes. A piano that holds a tune, with no cracked soundboard or dead keys, may find a new home, and a piano technician can tell you whether yours is worth keeping. Many older uprights cost more to repair than they would sell for.
Charities decide for themselves what they accept. None of the donation centers near Hollywood that we checked lists pianos among its accepted items, so a donation has to be agreed with the charity before pickup. If yours plays well, tell us when you book. A piano that cannot be reused is mostly wood, steel strings and a cast-iron plate; the pianos we haul go to recycling where the wood and metal can be reused, and a licensed disposal facility for the rest.
