Dumpster Rental vs Junk Removal in Hollywood, FL

A rented dumpster fits a renovation that produces debris for a week or more at a Hollywood house with a driveway to park it on. Junk removal fits a one-time clear-out: a crew carries everything out, and the load leaves when the crew does. Junky Jan is a junk removal crew and does not rent dumpsters.

Which one

Dumpster or junk removal: which fits your Hollywood job?

It comes down to how long the debris keeps coming and who does the lifting. A dumpster sits on your property for the rental period while you or your contractor fill it. A junk removal crew comes once, loads what is there and takes it away. The table matches common Hollywood jobs to the option that usually fits.

How rentals work

How does a roll-off dumpster rental work?

A roll-off truck sets an open-top steel container on your property and comes back for it at the end of the rental. Containers are sold by volume, most often 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 cubic yards. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so a 10-yard container holds 270 cubic feet and a 20-yard holds 540. For scale, Hollywood's monthly bulk pickup allows 6 cubic yards, or 162 cubic feet.

A quote usually covers delivery, a set number of days, the pickup and disposal of a weight allowance. Extra days and extra tons cost more, so get the allowance in writing along with the per-ton charge above it. For comparison, the Broward County Landfill charges $100 a ton for bulk waste and construction debris under its 2026 rate sheet.

City code

Where can a dumpster go at a Hollywood house?

On your own property, which in practice means the driveway. Hollywood's code makes it unlawful to place a dumpster that serves private property in any street, swale, alley, sidewalk or other public right-of-way, except on collection day for the time collection takes (section 50.02). A separate section bars placing articles of any kind in a public right-of-way (section 155.13). The code defines a dumpster around lidded containers and does not say whether an open-top construction roll-off counts, so ask the city before you plan on the swale. Right-of-way permits for temporary use of city property come from the Engineering division, 954-921-3900.

A loaded container weighs several tons and blocks a parking space until pickup day. Leave room for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and check your homeowners association's rules, which can be stricter than the city's.

If the dumpster serves a construction or repair job, the code also requires its debris to be removed or secured immediately once a hurricane warning is issued (section 101.04). Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

What can't go in a dumpster in Florida?

Florida bans several items from its landfills: lead-acid batteries, used oil and white goods, which state law defines to include refrigerators, freezers, ranges, water heaters and air conditioners. Whole tires may not be landfilled either. Ask the rental company how it handles any of these before one goes in the container, because each one needs its own route.

Paint, solvents and other household chemicals belong at Broward's household hazardous waste drop-off, not in a dumpster or a junk truck; the Broward County drop-off guide gives the sites and the Saturday hours. A refrigerator or a washer, on the other hand, is an ordinary pickup for a junk removal crew. See appliance removal.

  • Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners
  • Ranges, water heaters and other large appliances
  • Whole tires
  • Car batteries and other lead-acid batteries
  • Used motor oil
  • Paint, solvents and other chemicals
Heavy debris

Concrete, dirt and tile: why weight decides

Broken concrete, pavers, dirt and roof tile use up a container's weight allowance while it still looks half empty. Many rental companies send a smaller container for heavy debris or charge it by the ton, and some will not let it be mixed with general junk. Ask before ordering if the job is a patio, a driveway or a tile roof.

Hollywood's bulk pickup will not take any of it: rocks, dirt, concrete, brick, tile and roofing are on the city's list of construction materials it refuses. We take broken concrete, pavers, dirt and shingles in part loads, and heavy material is priced by weight as well as space. The construction debris removal page explains how those jobs run.

Junk removal

What a junk removal crew does that a dumpster doesn't

With a dumpster, you rent the container and do the loading yourself. With junk removal, you pay for the crew and the truck together. The difference matters most when the junk is heavy, upstairs or spread through a house, and when there is nowhere to put a container.

Carries it out

From the garage, an upstairs bedroom or a condo unit. Nobody in the house lifts anything.

Leaves nothing behind

No container on the driveway and no rental days. The spot is swept before the truck goes.

Prices it upfront

By the space the load takes in the truck, from a photo, before anything is loaded.

Comes back when needed

Repeat visits for contractors and landlords as a job moves along.

Works around buildings

Condo elevator windows and certificates of insurance are planned before the visit.

Sets good pieces aside

Furniture in good shape can be kept apart for donation, though each charity decides what it accepts.

Condos

Why dumpsters rarely work for Hollywood condos

A condo owner has no driveway to rent a container onto, and the building's own dumpsters are sized for daily trash, not a unit's furniture. Hollywood's monthly bulk pickup does not serve condo or apartment buildings either. That leaves carrying it out: the crew books the service elevator window, takes the pieces down and loads the truck at the curb or the loading dock. The condo junk removal page covers certificates of insurance and building hours.

Both

Using a dumpster and a crew on the same job

On a big project the two can split the work. Before a renovation, a crew clears the furniture and contents so the contractor starts with empty rooms, and the dumpster then takes the demolition debris. The last few loads that turn up after the container has gone can go on a truck instead of a second rental. An estate works the same way: the family and the charities take what they want, a crew clears the contents, and a contractor's dumpster handles any work on the house afterward.

FAQ

Questions about dumpster rental and junk removal in Hollywood

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Hollywood, FL?
The city's rules are about where it sits. Hollywood's code bars a dumpster serving private property from the street, swale, alley, sidewalk and other public right-of-way except during collection. Keep it on your driveway. If it has to use city property, ask the Engineering division on 954-921-3900 about a right-of-way permit first, and check your homeowners association's rules too.
Is junk removal cheaper than renting a dumpster in Hollywood?
It depends on how much there is and how long it takes to fill. Compare like with like: a junk removal price from a photo, against a dumpster quote that includes delivery, rental days, the weight allowance and the per-ton charge above it. With a dumpster the loading is yours. With junk removal the crew's labor is part of the price.
Can I put a refrigerator or a mattress in a dumpster in Florida?
A refrigerator only if the rental company agrees to handle it, because Florida bans white goods, including refrigerators, freezers and water heaters, from its landfills. Florida has no landfill ban on mattresses, so that comes down to the rental agreement. Both are ordinary pickups for a junk removal crew, and Hollywood's bulk pickup takes mattresses from houses and duplexes.
What size dumpster equals Hollywood's 6 cubic yard bulk limit?
None of the standard sizes is that small. Hollywood's monthly bulk pickup takes up to 6 cubic yards, which is 162 cubic feet, while the smallest common roll-off holds 10 cubic yards. A 20-yard container holds more than three months of bulk piles. If your pile is only a little over the city's limit, splitting it across two monthly pickups may be enough.
Do I need a dumpster for a garage cleanout in Hollywood?
Usually not. A garage cleanout is a one-day job, because the contents come out all at once rather than over weeks. A crew carries everything out and loads it in one visit, and nothing is left on the driveway afterward. A dumpster makes more sense if you plan to sort a packed garage slowly over several weekends.
Does Junky Jan rent dumpsters in Hollywood?
No. Junky Jan is a junk removal crew: we come with a truck, carry the junk out from wherever it sits, load it and haul it away in the same visit. If your project needs a container for weeks, a roll-off company is the right choice, and we can clear the contents before it arrives or the leftovers after it goes.
