Hollywood Bulk Trash Pickup Rules

Hollywood picks up bulk trash once a month from single-family homes and duplexes, up to 6 cubic yards a pickup, through Waste Pro. The city does not take construction materials, tires or yard waste in the bulk pile, and it does not serve condos or apartment buildings. Junky Jan hauls what the city leaves behind.

The schedule

When is bulk trash pickup in Hollywood?

Once a month, on a set weekday in a set week, depending on where you live. The city splits Hollywood into 30 bulk pickup zones, and Waste Pro works each one on its own day. Junky Jan gets asked this more than any other question, and the answer is on the city's sanitation page, which links a map of every zone.

You can also call Waste Pro on 954-967-4200 or the city's Environmental Services office on 954-967-4320 and give them your address. Write the day down once you have it: a pile that goes out a week early sits at the curb for most of a month, and that is how fines start.

The limit

How much bulk trash can you put out in Hollywood?

Six cubic yards per pickup. That is 162 cubic feet, which is a pile about 9 feet long, 6 feet wide and 3 feet high. A sofa, a mattress set, a dresser and a few chairs fit inside it. The contents of a garage do not.

The city's page is blunt about bigger piles: "oversized piles will not be removed." If the city does end up removing one, the property owner is charged a $200 processing fee plus $50 for each cubic yard over the limit. Splitting a big pile across two months works if you have somewhere to keep the second half. If you do not, that is a job for a hauler.

Accepted

What does Hollywood bulk pickup take?

Household furniture and appliances. The city lists these by name:

  • Stoves and dishwashers
  • Dressers, desks and chairs
  • Mattresses
  • Refrigerators, with the doors and the Freon removed
Refused

What won't Hollywood bulk pickup take?

Anything from a renovation, and anything hazardous. The city's list of refused construction materials is long: drywall, cinder block, brick, floor or bathroom tile, roofing tile or shingles, concrete, wooden fencing, glass, rocks, plumbing materials, wiring and dirt. It also refuses paint, tires, used oil, chemicals, propane tanks, and car and boat parts.

Wooden fencing surprises people, because some nearby cities take a few sections. Hollywood takes none. Refrigerators are accepted only with the doors off and the refrigerant already removed, which means paying a technician before the pickup. See appliance removal if you would rather hand over the whole job.

Yard waste is a separate service. Since October 2020 the city has collected it weekly, up to 4 cubic yards, with limbs cut to 4 feet or shorter, and the city's FAQ says no yard waste may be mixed into the bulk pile. Landscapers have to haul away what they cut.

Setting it out

Where and when to put bulk trash out in Hollywood

No more than 24 hours before your pickup day. Put it in the alley if your block has one, and on the swale if it does not. Keep the pile clear of mailboxes, parked cars and low branches so the truck's claw can reach it.

A pile set out early or in the wrong place gets a notice. The owner has 24 hours to fix it. After that the city can remove it and charge the disposal cost plus a $200 administration fee. Civil citations start at $75 and rise to $150, $250 and then $500 for repeat violations.

Not covered

Do condos and apartments get bulk pickup in Hollywood?

No. The monthly bulk pickup serves single-family homes and duplexes only. The city's page for multi-family properties and businesses calls that side an open market: each building arranges its own collection. If you live in a condo, your association's rules decide where a sofa or a mattress can go, and most buildings want it taken out through the service elevator at a booked time. Our condo junk removal page covers how those pickups run.

The rest

Where do the things Hollywood won't take go?

Most of them go to a Broward County site. Hollywood's disposal directory sends residents to the county's South drop-off center in West Park, open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with proof of Hollywood residency. Our Broward County drop-off guide lists every site and what each one refuses.

FAQ

Questions about bulk trash pickup in Hollywood

How do I find my bulk pickup day in Hollywood, FL?
Look up your address on the bulk pickup map linked from the City of Hollywood's sanitation page, or call Waste Pro on 954-967-4200. Hollywood has 30 zones, and each one is collected once a month on a fixed weekday in a fixed week. Your day does not change from month to month, so you only need to look it up once.
Does Hollywood bulk pickup take mattresses?
Yes. Mattresses are on the city's list of accepted bulk items, along with dressers, desks, chairs, stoves and dishwashers. Put the mattress out no more than 24 hours before your pickup day so it does not sit in the rain. If your day is weeks away, mattress removal by a private crew takes it the same or next day.
Will Hollywood pick up a refrigerator?
Only with the doors and the Freon removed. The city will not take a refrigerator that still holds refrigerant, and federal rules bar anyone from venting it, so a technician has to recover it first. Many residents find it simpler to have a hauler take the appliance as it stands and deal with the refrigerant through the recycler.
Can I put construction debris out for bulk pickup in Hollywood?
No. Hollywood refuses drywall, tile, brick, block, concrete, roofing, wooden fencing, glass, plumbing, wiring, rocks and dirt in the bulk pile. Small amounts of lumber can go to Broward's South drop-off center on a Saturday. Rocks, dirt and concrete go to the Broward County Landfill for a fee, or out with a private hauler.
What happens if my bulk pile in Hollywood is over 6 cubic yards?
The city's page says oversized piles will not be removed. If the city does remove one, the property owner is charged a $200 processing fee plus $50 for every cubic yard over the limit. You can hold part of the pile back for next month's pickup, or have a hauler take the whole load in one visit.
Can I put yard waste in the bulk pile in Hollywood?
No. Hollywood has collected yard waste separately since October 2020, once a week, up to 4 cubic yards, with limbs cut to 4 feet or shorter. Yard waste mixed into a bulk pile can leave the whole pile uncollected. If a landscaper or tree service did the cutting, the city expects them to haul it away.
