Which charities pick up donated furniture in Broward County?
Five charities near Hollywood take donated furniture. Two say they pick up for free at Hollywood addresses: the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. Faith Farm also says its pickups are free, but it does not publish how far its trucks go. If a piece can be donated, that is usually the cheapest way to get it out of the house, and Junky Jan hauls what is left.
The table comes from each charity's own pages, read on October 5, 2026. Rules and service areas change, so check the charity's page before you book. Habitat's ReStore page and the Salvation Army's scheduler are the two to start with.

What furniture won't Broward charities take?
Condition rules out more pieces than type does. Habitat's guidelines turn away furniture with odors, pet hair, rips or stains, and the Salvation Army says it does not take stained or ripped items. Both refuse pressboard and particle board, and The Caring Place adds Ikea furniture to its list.
Baby gear splits them: Goodwill lists cribs and children's car seats among what it takes, while Habitat refuses all baby items. Curbside clothing pickups are no help with furniture. Pickup Please, which collects for Vietnam Veterans of America, says on its Hollywood page that it does not accept furniture of any kind.
Some types are refused even in good shape:
- Armoires, wall units and entertainment centers
- China cabinets and custom-built furniture
- Formica, pressboard and particle board pieces
- Hospital beds and water beds
- Office furniture at Goodwill and The Caring Place. Habitat takes chairs and desks up to 4 feet long
How to book a donation pickup in Hollywood, in 4 steps
- Step 1
Check the list
Match each piece against the charity's accepted and refused lists before you book. A stain, a rip or a pressboard frame is the usual reason for a no.
- Step 2
Take photos
The Caring Place asks for photos of furniture and large appliances before it books a pickup. Photograph each piece, and the date label on a dishwasher: Habitat only takes ones made after 2012.
- Step 3
Book ahead
Habitat schedules pickups 4 to 7 days out, depending on location. On October 5, 2026, the Salvation Army's first open date for a Hollywood address was two days later.
- Step 4
Bring it down
Salvation Army drivers do not carry furniture up or down stairs. Have each piece on the ground floor, in the garage or by the front door on pickup day.
Can you donate a used mattress in Broward County?
Yes, if it is clean and whole. The Salvation Army takes mattresses and box springs that are not stained or ripped, though not king-size box springs. Habitat's ReStore takes mattresses and box springs with no stains, tears or odors, and The Caring Place lists mattresses among what it accepts. Goodwill does not take mattresses at all. In Miami-Dade County, Lotus House Thrift takes mattresses and picks up, but only inside Miami-Dade.
Florida has no mattress recycling program. The industry's Bye Bye Mattress program runs only in California, Connecticut, Oregon and Rhode Island. Hollywood's monthly bulk pickup does take mattresses from single-family homes and duplexes, under the Hollywood bulk trash pickup rules. For a condo, or a date that can't wait, see mattress removal.
Donating a refrigerator, washer or stove in Broward
Two charities offer free pickup for working appliances. The Salvation Army takes washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves and upright freezers from Hollywood addresses, but not built-in appliances or water heaters. Habitat's ReStore takes any working appliance, and dishwashers only if made after 2012. Goodwill takes neither large appliances nor washers and dryers.
A broken appliance has no charity route, and Florida law keeps it out of the landfill as well: refrigerators, stoves, water heaters and other white goods are banned from Florida landfills, so they end up at metal recycling. Our appliance removal page explains how refrigerators and freezers are handled.
Donating furniture from a Hollywood condo
The stairs rule matters most in a tower. The Salvation Army's scheduler says its drivers do not move furniture up or down stairs, and it says nothing about elevators, so plan on having the piece in the lobby or at the loading area. That usually means booking the service elevator with the association, and asking where a charity truck may park and for how long.
When nobody in the household can bring a sofa down to the lobby, the charity route stops working. A crew can take it from the unit, and pieces in good shape can be set aside for donation, though the charity still decides what it accepts. The condo junk removal page covers how building rules shape a pickup.
Getting a tax receipt for donated furniture in Florida
Ask for a receipt at pickup. Faith Farm says it gives a donation receipt with every pickup. Keep the photos you took before booking, since they show the condition of what you gave. Goodwill notes that its pickup fee is not tax deductible, and the new deduction for people who do not itemize, which starts in 2026, covers cash gifts only, not furniture.
The IRS rules for deducting furniture are in Publication 526. This is a summary, not tax advice:
- Household items must be in good used condition or better
- A gift worth $250 or more needs a written acknowledgment from the charity
- Noncash gifts over $500 in a year mean filing Form 8283
- One item, or a group of similar items, worth over $5,000 needs a qualified appraisal
What to do with furniture a charity turns down
A refused piece still has free options if you live in a house. Hollywood's monthly bulk pickup takes furniture and mattresses from single-family homes and duplexes, up to 6 cubic yards, and Broward's Saturday drop-off centers take bulk items from residents of participating cities. The Broward County drop-off guide lists each site.
When the city's date is weeks away, the piece is upstairs, or the home is a condo, we take it from the room it sits in. The price is set by the space it takes in the truck and given before anything is lifted; junk removal cost explains how. For a whole household, book the charity pickup first and have us clear what is left.
