Office Furniture Disposal in Broward County, FL

A Broward business cannot use the county's Saturday drop-off centers, and city bulk pickups serve homes, so office furniture needs its own plan. Habitat for Humanity's ReStore takes office chairs and desks up to 4 feet, the Salvation Army takes some desks, and Goodwill takes no office furniture at all. Junky Jan hauls what is left.

Who takes it

Who will take used office furniture in Broward County?

A handful of charities take some of it, and none takes all of it. The table below comes from each one's own pages, read on October 5, 2026. None of them says whether it takes pickups from a business rather than a household, so ask before you book. No charity or public reuse program in Broward that we found says it takes cubicles or partitions, and Habitat refuses them by name. If yours has to go anyway, Junky Jan carries out what the charities leave.

Can a business use Broward's drop-off centers or the landfill?

Not the drop-off centers. Broward's residential guidelines list "Business-and government-generated waste" among the items the centers do not accept, and say small businesses, home-based ones included, should not bring hazardous waste or electronics to any county facility. The centers also turn away commercial vehicles at the gate.

The Broward County Landfill at 7101 SW 205th Avenue is the public option. It takes bulk waste from inside Broward at $100 a ton under its 2026 rate sheet, Monday to Saturday, and refuses hazardous waste, lead-acid batteries and used oil. It is a long drive west of Hollywood, so it makes sense for a full trailer rather than a few chairs.

City bulk pickup is not an option either. Hollywood's monthly pickup serves single-family homes and duplexes, and the city treats businesses as an open market that arranges its own collection, as our Hollywood bulk trash pickup rules guide explains.

Before it leaves

Files, drives and data: what Florida law expects

Empty every filing cabinet and wipe or destroy every drive before the furniture goes. Florida's data security law, section 501.171(8), requires any business that holds customer records with personal information to dispose of them by "shredding, erasing, or otherwise modifying the personal information in the records to make it unreadable or undecipherable." It applies whatever form the records take, paper or digital.

Federal rules point the same way. The FTC's Disposal Rule covers any organization that uses consumer reports, and the EPA recommends certified electronics recyclers, whose two standards, R2 and e-Stewards, both require that all data on used electronics is destroyed. Pull the hard drives from old desktops before they go anywhere, and keep a note of who destroyed them.

  • Empty and shred the paper in filing cabinets and desk drawers
  • Remove or wipe hard drives from computers and copiers
  • Keep a record of who destroyed the drives and when
  • Check under drawers and in cabinet backs for loose files
Electronics and lamps

Monitors, printers and light tubes from an office

Florida has no law aimed only at discarded electronics, but the Florida Department of Environmental Protection points to the general rules that do apply: lead in the glass of old tube monitors and TVs, and mercury in the backlights of many flat panels. The EPA treats tube monitors marked for disposal as hazardous waste. FDEP recommends a recycler with a third-party certification, and suggests asking how it destroys the data.

Fluorescent tubes have a rule of their own. Under Florida law, a commercial facility that disposes of more than 10 spent lamps a month must send them to a permitted lined landfill or a permitted reclamation facility. Our commercial junk removal page covers which office electronics we take.

Metal pieces

Metal filing cabinets and steel desks

Steel furniture is the hardest to place. The Salvation Army's pickup rules refuse metal filing cabinets, Habitat refuses roll-top desks, and no Broward County page we found says a county facility takes metal furniture from a business as scrap. Steel can be recycled as scrap metal, but a business has to find a scrap yard that will take it, and get it there.

That usually makes metal cabinets and old steel desks the part of an office cleanout that ends up with a hauler. Empty them first: a full filing cabinet is far heavier than an empty one, and the paper inside is the part Florida law cares about.

Moving day

Clearing an office in a Hollywood building

Office buildings add their own rules: a freight elevator booked for a set window, the loading dock, sometimes after-hours access only, and often a certificate of insurance before any contractor comes in. Plan the furniture removal for the same window as the move, so the elevator is booked once.

If some pieces are going to a charity, book that pickup first and have the rest hauled after. Tell the hauler which pieces stay, and mark them.

FAQ

Questions about office furniture disposal in Broward County

Does Goodwill take office furniture in Hollywood, FL?
No. Goodwill South Florida lists office furniture among the items it does not accept, along with mattresses and large appliances. Its Hollywood stores take household furniture only. For office chairs and small desks, Habitat for Humanity's Broward ReStore is the better place to ask, and the Salvation Army takes some desks.
Will Habitat for Humanity take office desks in Broward County?
Some. The Broward ReStore takes office chairs and desks 4 feet long or smaller, in good condition. It refuses conference tables, partitions, roll-top desks and office electronics such as copiers, printers and fax machines. Its guidelines do not say whether it takes pickups from businesses, so ask when you call.
Can my business use the Broward County drop-off centers?
No. Broward's residential guidelines list business-generated waste among the items the drop-off centers do not accept, and commercial vehicles are turned away. Small and home-based businesses are told not to bring hazardous waste or electronics to any county facility. The Broward County Landfill takes bulk waste from inside Broward for a fee by the ton.
What do I do with old hard drives before an office cleanout in Florida?
Wipe or destroy them before anything leaves the building. Florida law requires businesses holding customer records with personal information to dispose of them by shredding, erasing or otherwise making the information unreadable, and that covers digital records. Certified electronics recyclers under the R2 and e-Stewards standards must destroy all data on the devices they take.
Where do old fluorescent tubes from a Broward office go?
To a permitted facility. Florida law says a commercial facility that disposes of more than 10 spent lamps a month must send them to a permitted lined landfill or a permitted reclamation facility, and lamps must not knowingly be incinerated. Fluorescent lamps that are recycled count as universal waste in Florida.
Can a Florida business deduct donated office furniture?
Ask your accountant before counting on it. Business property follows different IRS rules from household gifts: Publication 526 says property used in a trade or business is treated as ordinary income property to the extent of depreciation, which generally limits the deduction to its basis. The charity's receipt is still worth keeping.
